Internationalisation and English medium education in Vietnamese universities: Professional role transformation among English language lecturers

This paper investigates an emerging professional role transformation in Vietnamese universities, whereby English language teaching (ELT) lecturers transform themselves into medium instruction (EMI) a discipline new to them. Through interviews with five ELT/EMI working separate universities and different disciplines, the study reasons for their decision engage such mobility, experience, its implications educational quality. We argue that participants’ move EMI was shaped by strategic imperative higher education internationalisation, mistaken belief alone can achieve development students require academic success. It is also argued option made available participants not best use of skills, profound change perspective needed at institutional level most effectively strengths ELT support
